    Interesting that the geology around Newbury differs to that around Peasemore, Lambourn, and Harswell, in that it is not easily tunnelled when compared to the chalks of the latter. Thus, the geology confirms your investigation - good work Ben! As for the baptismal font inscription, IMO it appears to be LX - Theta.Upsilon.Sigma; that translates as 60 T.Y.E.. Hope this helps.
